Arishima Takeo

1878–1923

Born into a wealthy Tokyo family and educated in agriculture in Sapporo and the United States, he became one of the leading figures of the Shirakaba-ha, a literary group devoted to humanism and individualism. His fiction probes the conflict between personal freedom and social conscience, often shadowed by guilt over inherited privilege. The novel A Certain Woman (Aru Onna) remains his masterwork, a searching portrait of a passionate woman crushed by Meiji society, while Cain's Descendants and the essay The Lazy Thinker reveal a restless moral imagination. His life ended in a notorious double suicide with a married journalist, sealing his legacy as a writer of beautiful, uncompromising sincerity.
